Just install the new ROM from the HTC webpage under hero support. It will solve the problem. Make a back up beforehand as it deletes everything.

As Navjeet said - the solution is not to plug it in and turn it off then on.

When I did that I went from having sound in one earbud to the phone not even recognizing the headphones were plugged in. I had to restart without them plugged in to get the phone to see the headphones again.

Its the reverse. The solution is unplug the headset from the jack and then restart and once its at the home screen try plugging in. It worked for me after a frustrating 2 hour ordeal.
