When I did that I went from having sound in one earbud to the phone not even recognizing the headphones were plugged in. I had to restart without them plugged in to get the phone to see the headphones again. As Navjeet said – the solution is not to plug it in and turn it off then on.

The solution is unplug the headset from the jack and then restart and once its at the home screen try plugging in. It worked for me after a frustrating 2 hour ordeal. Its the reverse.
