LG to Add Google Functions to Phones
LG Electronics and Google are teaming up to offer the search giant’s services on some of LG’s mobile phones. The Korean electronics maker announced that it will ship select handsets preinstalled with Google products and services — including Google Maps, Blogger Mobile and Gmail — during the second quarter of this year.
“LG’s mobile devices, combined with Google, will provide consumers with easy access to their favorite Internet services even without a PC and make it easy for them to stay connected while in motion,” Paul Bae, vice president of product planning at LG Electronics Mobile Communications Co. said in a statement.
LG, the world’s fifth-largest maker of handsets, plans to release at least 10 new handset models with the Google products in 2007 and continue offering them for the next few years. The two companies will jointly market the handsets.
LG is not the first cell phone maker to tie-up with both Google and Yahoo. Motorola has also agreed with both major search and content companies to feature some of their products and services on select cell phone models.
LG shipped 64.4 million handsets in 2006, a rise of 17.3 percent on 2005, according to figures from IDC. Those shipments translated into a 6.3 percent share of the world market.
