Microsoft today released a new Media Player plugin for Firefox that resolves the problems users of the older version were experiencing. That allows users to play Windows Media Player in FireFox.
The new plug-in supports Windows XP SP2 and Vista as well as 64 bit versions of both operating systems. The plug-in allows Windows Media Player to work on Firefox, Microsoft’s main competition for its Internet Explorer 7 browser, and resolves known issues with the older version, according to Hank Janssen, the program manager for Port 25, Microsoft’s software lab that works with open source.
The plug-in is available on Firefox’s add-on site and is backwards compatible with Windows Media Player version 6.4. It also adds support for Windows OCX scripting interfaces. These allow developers to add more functionality to an application.
Microsoft is also working on another plug-in for Firefox. The Port 25 lab announced last November that it was working with Mozilla Corp., creator of Firefox, on a plug-in for CardSpace, Microsoft’s identity management technology.
