First you have to install itune 9
Rename the .zip to .ipsw
Plug in and connect the iPod Touch to computer.
Run iTunes 9
Select the iPod Touch from Devices list.

Coz you downloaded the Wrong Firmware.
First Check which Ipod touch you have 1G, 2G or 3G
Than download the Firmware and do the same process.

I do as per the instructions. As soon as I select the appropriate ipsw file, it says,
‘iTunes will erase and restore your iPod to iPhone 3.1.1 software and will verify the restore with Apple.’
That last bit about verifying the restore… is that just paranoia on my part?

Here are steps to do
1. Download the Firmware for your ipot touch ( If it was saved as zip file than rename to ipsw )
2. Save that firmware on your desktop
3. Plugin you ipod touch with itunes 9
4. When the ipod touch i connnected Clikc Shift+restore Button. a new Browser windows will come on the screen.
5. Now Open the ipsw file that you saved in destop in browse window, and click ok
6. Thats it!

For the last 4 days my ipod has been unusable thx to my efforts in updating the software, ive been on countless sites and they all pretty much tell me to do the same thing, but as my ipod is restoring and updating i get an error message, so i tried this site and downloaded all 3 links for the 2g touch and the splitter, joined the 3 files and tried to update it, now its sayin the firmware is not compatable,, plz help as my last resort is to actually buy the update jus so that i can use my ipod again.

i got the 2nd gen, it was bought for me in mid July this yr so it cant be a 3rd gen, it has the external speaker and the volume control, i did try the 3rd gen download and it gave me the same message, the firmware is not compatible, could there be any other reason why it is not working?

I was one of the many who got very disturbed (to say the least ) when I found out that we, I-Pod users, were asked to pay to upgrade software.

Man I dont know how I did it but My Ipod got updated for free from a 16gb 2g ipod touch now I have version 3.1.1, I went to a Cyber and they had a Itunes 8.0 conected my ipod, it told me there was an update (I always see that, so is normal) but i dont know why I prees the buttom to update, first it downloaded the software, then made a backup, aftewards it make the update, man it all happend in 1 and half hour, can you explain what happen?, or it was coincidence.

Running a Touch 2G, Software version 2.2.1, about 4 months old. Downloaded the 3 files for 2g, merged them with HJsplit, confirmed they were merged, i.e., 3-12.8 kb files joined to form a 38.5 kb file. Went into itunes 9, did the shift+restore, browsed the file and got the error: The ipod could not be restored because the firmware is incompatible… So i thought hey maybe it’s a leftover 1G. Tried that and got the same error. Even tried firmware for 3 G, all 297 megs and got the same error. Tried 3 times with each file… Thoughts?

Hey Raj, the computer has to be connected to the internet for this method to work. It needs to verify with Apple before actually installing it on your itouch. And YES I already have it downloaded to my computer and followed all of your steps…that’s why some people cannot get it to work even after downloading the 3.1 software onto their computer.

Ok, I’m not at home right now, so I was wondering, if I download iTune 9 from this computer and connect my 2G 16GB iPod Touch and do all I have to do, will I lose all my songs and videos and applications? Is it possible to do a backup on another computer? And what will happen if I do everything and I connect on my computer during next week, will I lose something?
If I can’t, I guess I could always pay (even if I think it’s really stupid that we, iPod users, have to pay for something free…), but the same problem remains, can I do so without losing my whole library in the process?

Hey. I’ve got the 8gb itouch. pretty sure its a 2g one because the model comes up when i typed the model code into google. Anyway, i did everything you said. downloaded the 2g software update for 3.1, joint them, connected to itunes version 9. And about half way through the restore (about when it says authenticating or registering with apple or something). this error comes up saying that “This device is not eligable for the requested build”.
